NHE is proud to announce that a center for disabled children will open in Baku in February, with the official opening scheduled for March.
NHE has worked for 16 years with disabled and orphaned children in Azerbaijan. Now this work has taken a new direction through the establishment of a Resources Development Center in Baku for disabled children. This center will serve as a hub for providing services and assistance to disabled children and their families, and is part of a deinstitutionalization initiative to help parents to care and cater for their children at home, rather than subject them to a childhood in an institution. The local company ”Lighthouse Consulting Ltd.”, headed by MD Steve Stonehouse and Azer Gurbanov, has been chosen as the implementing partner, and NHE is committed to providing funding and technical assistance for the establishment phase of the centre.
Starting work
- We believe that this center is a good way to help families with disabled children. We expect the center to be up and running in February and we plan to staff the center with local staff. Sevil Farajova has been appointed as the center’s first manager, says Stonehouse.
NHE director Jon Petter Feidal is happy to see the Resources Development Center now starting work.
- The realization of this idea which came to us in 2008 has taken a long time and been a difficult process. It is a great joy to finally be able to announce the opening of this center! says Feidal.
The running of the center is funded and monitored through grants provided through NHE’s Children and Youth program, and it is already attracting health care and other personnel who want to volunteer their time to help disabled children get a better life.
