Building for the future

A young entrepreneur in Northwestern Azerbaijan just opened her own beauty/hair dressing salon. She is one of the beneficiaries of the New Life with Dignity vocational training program.

A small village in the Northwestern region of Azerbaijan, just got its first beauty salon for ladies. This new business venture was set up by Rufane H. and her family with a small grant from New Life with Dignity (NLWD), a Finnish government funded project that works to offer young people in need assistance with vocational training and entrepreneurship. This included helping the young trainees to develop a small business of their own or find employment within their vocational training trade with an existing business.

Skills and business training

The NLWD project offers two types of training; skills training with a master and internationally certified business courses.

- Rufane is a very good student, always attending her course lessons and skills training, says Kemale Mustafayeva, community mobilizer and business trainer for NHE.

Rufane herself says that she learnt a lot during the training.

- Everything was interesting, but my favorite part of the training was to learn how to cut and dye ladies’ hair, she says.

After completing her six months of skills training and getting her certificate from the International Labour Organization’s business training, Rufane has now started working.

- I plan to work every day, she says.

Her own business

A small grant enabled her and her family to build a small house for the beauty salon on their property. They partly funded the building themselves and Rufane now runs the only beauty salon in the village. The business training has helped her select a good location, establish the right price level for her products and get started. Project manager Oleg Danakari and project advisor Janne Aitta presented Rufane with a diploma and a cake to celebrate the achivement with her family.
