Agriculture Program
Assisting poor and vulnerable farmers in the process of developing sustainable farming

Empowering rural communities of Azerbaijan through farming, community development and technology initiatives.

The Agriculture Program was created in 2002 to help farmers in some of the agricultural regions of Azerbaijan to develop and maintain sustainable and independent agriculture. With funding from NHE, the program, through its Ganja based project, aims to contribute to the development in various agricultural sectors in Ganja and the surrounding regions by encouraging co-operation between farmers through unions. The program also provides advice and training, while promoting utilization of local resources and solutions and implementing new technologies. Currently the project in Ganja is focusing on the training of farmers, community development, artificial insemination, feeding, storing, greenhouse and crop growing activities.

The Sheki Agricultural Development Project started in 2008, following a 3-year pilot project with very positive results, and is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). The project has been working with farmers in the Sheki, Gakh, Gabala and Oguz regions to promote independent agriculture practices. Currently the projects include trainings, work amongst women, community development, artificial insemination, milk and feed processing, bee farming, conservation, greenhouse farming, and crop growing activities.

Since 2002, more than 15 farmer unions and 38 farmer groups have been organized, 30 greenhouses have been refurbished, more than 80 training sessions have been conducted, and over 4,200 inseminations of cattle have been carried out resulting in the birth of over 1,300 calves. More than 15,300 farmers have benefited from The Ganja and Sheki Agricultural Projects, many of them women, IDPs and refugees, as well as representatives from many of Azerbaijan’s minority groups.

In 2007, AzNor Agro was registered as a business entity by locals, as a result of project activities but separate from the project. The purpose is to establish and run a farm close to Ganja aimed at developing good agricultural practices and quality products. Research, training, information and exchange of skills and experience between Norway and Azerbaijan are also encouraged throughout the project.
